I recently saw a meme where a group of people was cautiously peering from a corner as one of them, with a long pole, trepidatiously pushed open a door that had the number 2021 on it. Humanity can only hope that this new year will be better than the last one. But even with a vaccine for Covid-19 out, we still see some carryover from last year in politics, racial divide, and the uncertainty of what could be next.
Psalm 62:6 points us back to our rock, salvation, and fortress in these times of unpredictability.
“He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.” — Psalm 62:6
Notice that the Psalm says that only God is that rock when you need stability. Has there been a recent time in your life that you felt like you were sinking? God is your stability; stand on Him. The Psalmist continues to say that God is his only salvation. The word salvation implies that there is danger, even life-threatening danger. At the moment that you experience the feeling that you need a Savior, from the stresses of life, from broken relationships, and even from yourself, Jesus is waiting with open arms because He is the only One who can save you. Jesus also promises to come again and save us from this world of hurt and pain. When Jesus comes again, He will make all the wrongs right. Amid his battle to reform the church of his day, Martin Luther wrote the song’ ” A mighty Fortress is Our God.” There, Luther speaks of the great controversy between Christ and Satan that was waging in his life. He says that the devil’s attacks are fierce and that no one can stand against him, but Jesus is our only fortress from the attacks of our enemies, from the attacks on our families. Jesus is “our bulwark that never fails,” as Martin Luther puts it! The Psalmist finishes by telling us that when we have Jesus as our rock and salvation, we can trust that we will not be shaken. Friend, will you place your trust in Jesus today? Will you allow Him to be the firm foundation in your life? If you would like to begin to know Jesus as your rock, salvation, and fortress, please comment below. I’d love to talk with you. As you meet the Jesus of the scriptures, I am confident that you will be on solid ground!
