Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” After God had laid the foundations of the world and filled it with beauty and splendor, His crowning act was to create human beings, and He gave them dominion over this newly created world.
There’s no mistaking in this text that humans were made in the image of God. To be made in the image of God is to reflect His character and sovereignty. To say that human beings were a product of the evolutionary process defrauds us of our potential and degrades us of our dignity and origin. Though he was formed of the dust, Adam was the son of God.
In describing the physical and mental attributes of Adam and Eve, Ellen G. White states, “His nature was in harmony with the will of God. His mind was capable of comprehending divine things. His affections were pure; his appetites and passions were under the control of reason. He was holy and happy in bearing the image of God and in perfect obedience to His will. He [Adam] was more than twice as tall as men now living upon the earth, and was well proportioned. His features were perfect and beautiful. … Eve was not quite as tall as Adam. Her head reached a little above his shoulders. She, too, was noble, perfect in symmetry, and very beautiful.” (CC 11.3-CC 11.5)
It doesn’t take the most intelligent person on the face of the earth to see that currently we are a far cry from what is described as the mental and physical state of Adam and Eve. But something beautiful written in the Bible that encourages me and gives me hope is there will be a day when Jesus comes. He will transform us in the twinkling of an eye, and this corruptible will put on incorruption and this mortal will put on immortality.
You see, God’s in the business of restoration. He wants to take us back to who He wanted us to be. The hope that we have today is that Jesus will make all things right. The only thing you have to do is give your life to Him and have faith—trust that He will make all things right.
