If you were asked for the best evidence that you could produce to show that God exists, what would you say? Some would begin to wax eloquent with scientific data that supports the necessity of a creator. There is nothing wrong with that. In fact, many people need to hear scientific evidence to be convinced that God is real. If asked the same question, others would flip through the scriptures and convince people that they better believe in God because the alternative, at worst, is an eternally burning hell or, at best, being laid to sleep forever. For some people, that might be the push to get them to believe.

But what if God says that the best evidence for his existence is something distinct and more profound than the above stated? What if God wants his children to reflect something about Himself that would convince the most hardened atheist that God, in fact, is real? What if what God wants is that we reflect His character? (Which by the way, is precisely what He made us for.) If that is true, we have to figure out what God’s character is.
1 John 4:8 gives us the idea we are to love others because God is love. If this is true, it means that the way we treat people reveals if we believe in God or not. Simply put, if we love, we know God, and if we don’t love, we don’t know Him because God is ultimate love. As Jesus was approaching His death on the cross, He said something very profound to his disciples. Jesus tells them that the world will know that you are My disciples if you love one another (John 13:35). Though scientific evidence is a tool that Christians can use for the evidence of God, and they can recite scripture in the most eloquent ways, the real proof for the existence of the God who is love is to love. The most published female author of the 19th Century, Ellen Gould White, hit the nail on the head when she wrote, “A kind, courteous Christian is the most powerful argument that can be produced in favor of Christianity.”
