As humans, we are used to working for people’s approval or favor. To be accepted by your boss, colleagues, or friends, you have to perform. It is natural to think that the most perfect being in the universe would want the same thing. We are so used to performing to gain the favor of people that surround us that we mistakenly approach God that way. The problem with that way of thinking is that, in some vague way, we are relying on our effort and self-dependence in our relationship with God. We have this idea that we can somehow win God’s approval by trying as hard as we can. The truth is that no matter how hard we try, we are going to fail. We don’t have it in us to be perfect, and God knows that.
The beauty of the gospel is that God doesn’t expect us to be perfect and perform for Him – He just wants us to come to Him. It is when we come to Jesus that we are made perfect in Him. Jesus invites us to receive the benefits of His perfect life. We will never be good enough without Him. When we connect to Jesus, His perfect life and sacrificial death are applied to us. That is the freedom of the gospel. It’s not what you know or even what you do; it’s all about who you know. It is in Jesus that we have the hope of becoming children of God. Blessings!
