Modified things tend to be more desirable than the factory standard product. The definition of modification is “to make partial or minor changes to (something), typically so as to improve it or to make it less extreme.” For example, if you’re into cars or know someone into cars, a modified car is faster, better looking and more valuable than the standard factory design. Modifications on things tend to be more desirable because they’re improved. But what about our spiritual lives? Is modification adequate for our spiritual lives? Can we settle for modification when it comes to a relationship with Jesus? What about modifications to sin or the spiritual struggles we have?
When I read the Bible, it suggests that a mere modification in our lives is not enough for Jesus; He asks for more. The reason why modification is not enough is that every modification still has original parts. And when we talk about sin, there is no room for original parts. If we are merely modified, then sin still lives deep down in our beings and will always come to light. Jesus doesn’t settle for modifications; He wants real transformation. Jesus wants to take all that is terrible, nasty, and rude out of us and put in His character of love, kindness, and joy. The only way that can happen is by asking Jesus to give you a desire to lay down everything you are for Him. Ask Jesus to subject your passions and your ideas to His will, and you will see the amazing transformation that you can experience through the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus wants to ultimately put His nature in us, a nature that loves others before self. He wants to remove selfishness and replace it with selflessness.
